Case Study: Northampton Hospital

Scope of Work: Lifting and positioning of solar panels and building materials

Project Overview

At Northampton General Hospital, our team was engaged to complete a critical out-of-hours lifting and placement operation for solar panels and essential building materials as part of an energy efficiency upgrade. Given the hospital’s round-the-clock activity and the need to minimise any impact on daily operations, we carefully scheduled the work to begin at 7:00 PM, ensuring minimal disruption to staff, patients, and visitors. The job required precise planning to navigate the hospital’s busy environment and maintain safety and accessibility throughout the project.

Solution

For this project, we deployed both our Tadano ATF70 and the Klaas K700 remote control crane depending on the set up location and needs of each visit.  The Tadano 70 tonne was used for its greater lifting capacity at longer radius and the K700 for its versatility and remote-control capabilities which enabled our team to manoeuvre and operate the crane with precision in the constrained hospital environment. Our approach included setting up a variable rig configuration, enabling the crane to lift materials while keeping the road open. Temporary traffic lights were installed to maintain a single-lane flow, allowing hospital access to remain uninterrupted.

Outcome

Our team completed the project efficiently, safely, and to the customer’s specifications, with Northampton General Hospital expressing high satisfaction with our service. This successful operation exemplifies our commitment to flexibility, safety, and meeting the unique demands of each client.

Tanks A Lot Ltd

Client: Tanks A Lot Ltd
Location: Brackley, Northamptonshire
Equipment Used: Tadano ATF70, Three man team, Chains and Slings to lifting points.
Scope of Work: Lifting of a number of tanks some in working order and some not, from the ground location to the lorry bed for transportation to Ukraine.

Project Overview

At Tanks A Lot Ltd in Brackley, Northamptonshire, the project involved lifting several military tanks, some operational and others not, for transportation to Ukraine. The tanks, including the 2S1 Howitzer (21 tonnes) and the 2S3 Howitzer (28 tonnes), needed to be moved from their ground positions onto lorry beds. The task required precision and care due to the weight and historical significance of the equipment.

Outcome

The tanks were successfully lifted and loaded onto lorries within the required timeframe, enabling smooth transportation to Ukraine. The project highlighted the team’s versatility and expertise in handling extraordinary tasks, while maintaining the highest safety standards. The operation also offered an engaging and memorable experience for the crew, adding a sense of accomplishment and pride to their work.

Solution

A Tadano ATF70 crane was deployed for its capability to handle heavy loads efficiently. A skilled three-man team executed the operation over two days to accommodate transport scheduling. The tanks were securely lifted using slings and chains attached to their designated lifting points, ensuring stability and safety throughout the process.

This unique job stood out from typical lifting operations, with the team showing a keen interest in the historical and logistical aspects of the work. Notably, the crane operator, Tony, expressed great enthusiasm and thoroughly enjoyed being part of the project.

Scott Bader Ltd

Client: Scott Bader Ltd
Location: Wollaston, Wellingborough, Northamptonshire
Equipment Used: Liebherr LTM1160; 70T Tadano; Bocker AK52 & Artic Hiab
Scope of Work: Replacement of tank lids; movement of old tanks within site compound and replacement of new storage facilities within site compound

Project Overview

Our valued customer, Scott Bader, contacted us to request help with a multi-faceted schedule for the replacement of tanks for storage on their site in Wollaston during the planned shut down for maintenance works.  They required a number of operations taking place on site in separate locations simultaneously to achieve their planned schedule within the allotted timescale.

Outcome

By using multiple machines on site, all within the 1-day time frame, with expert control and coordination by the A-Lift team on site, all operations were completed safely, without issue to any equipment or other site operations.

Solution

A-Lift Crane Hire sent one of our experienced Appointed Persons to survey the job and discussing the precise logistics of the job with the Scott Bader team on a number of occasions.  As a result, a lift plan was developed to utilise our 70 ton Tadano crane to load tanks on site on to an Artic Hiab.  The tanks were then transported within the compound on to the hiab for lifting and siting with a Liebherr 160 ton crane in to their new required location behind buildings within the compound.

While this work was progressing, our Bocker AK52 remote control crane would be in another location within the Scott Bader compound assisting in lifts to carry out essential maintenance work on other equipment and vessels.
